"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. Several high-profile admirers have also petitioned for the role.

One thing is obvious something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy contenders.

Like all the best bands, they're a close gang. Their videos frequently show them walking in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered exuberance you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"Therefore all is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Recognition

The trio are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a significant achievement," continues Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The project was born from a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes follow endings and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That developed resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The trio's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an global following.

But the sister act will forever be their primary priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
