The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
