Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the censorship procedure.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that came before the congressional vote to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were given physical binders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
