Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
