The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Additionally, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Understanding The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could assist individuals reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.

Medical Experts Voice Concerns

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting products of uncertain source.

The substance is not a controlled substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and consumer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or imprisonment.

Based on TikTok, the service has taken down problematic content and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.

Research also discovered groups with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of entering one group, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged testing documentation. None asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Within these groups, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between powder vials, prepared at residence with sterile water, or pre-filled pens typically priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor connected the increase in demand to current price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
