Exactly 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story film was released, launching the animation giant as a leading animation studio and bringing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a brief look into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Gang

In the teaser reveals the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he grew up — receiving a latest plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the toys appear to consider it as a threat intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer doesn't touch on is why the sheriff is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with the shepherdess (the actress), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser displays the insignia attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is remains the driving force among the group.

Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
