The skiing legend Optimistic of Being 'in a good place' for Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics

Lindsey Vonn in action

The veteran skier had a surgical implant installed in her right knee during her break from competitive skiing.

American skiing icon Lindsey Vonn has declared she will be "in an excellent position" for the upcoming Winter Olympics, after earning a place on the rostrum for the fourth instance in five World Cup competitions.

The veteran athlete, who last week set a record by becoming the most senior racer to win a downhill World Cup winner, came in third place in the super-G in Val d'Isere on Sunday. This represented her one hundred and forty-second career World Cup top-three result.

Strong Return in Val d'Isere

Returning to the iconic venue for the first time in almost a decade, Vonn crossed the line in a time of one minute 20.60 seconds. She was just over a third of a second behind victor Sofia Goggia of Italy, with New Zealand's Alice Robinson taking second place.

"I was slightly lacking enough direction on the initial jump," Vonn remarked. "From that point on, I performed strongly. I'm pleased with my performance today, in contrast to in the super-G in St Moritz, where I was overly cautious."

This performance was her second top-three finish at Val d'Isere during the event, having also finished third in the downhill race on Saturday.

An Incredible Return from Retirement

Vonn officially retired in early 2019 due to ongoing knee problems. However, she returned to racing in December 2024 following a significant orthopedic procedure.

With 47 days remaining until the 2026 Winter Games, which are set to run from 6-22 February, Vonn's form are timely.

She boasts one gold and two Olympic bronze medals in her collection and is strongly positioned to represent the United States at the 2026 Games.

"In Cortina, I will be where I need to be," the athlete confirmed.

Chasing More Titles

Alongside her Olympic ambitions, Vonn is also hoping to add to the four overall crystal globes she has won over a career spanning 20 years.

She currently holds a substantial lead at the top of the overall downhill standings and is ranked fifth in the overall super-G standings.

This current World Cup campaign includes a nine more events taking place before the season finals in Kvitfjell, Norway on 21 March 2026.
